A study by the Ludwig Institute for Shared Economic Prosperity found that the majority of U.S. households cannot cover a basket of “minimum quality of life” items—including housing, food, transportation, clothing, healthcare and modest leisure—because costs in many categories have skyrocketed while wages have stagnated. The study estimates an average U.S. family with two children needs about $120,302 annually to meet this threshold.
